UNDERSTANDING REIKI

The word Reiki (ray-kee) is derived from two Japanese words: Rei, meaning universal, and Ki, meaning life force energy. Together, they describe something profound— an intelligent, non-invasive healing energy that has flowed through all living things since the beginning of time. Unlike many healing modalities, Reiki does not follow a prescribed path. This universal life force energy carries its own wisdom, moving naturally and intuitively to wherever it is most needed, working always for the greatest good of the recipient.

THE ORIGINS OF MODERN REIKI

While Reiki itself is ancient, it was a Japanese scholar and spiritual seeker named Mikao Usui who, at the turn of the 20th century, brought it into documented practice. During a deep meditative retreat near Mount Kurama in Japan, Usui received a profound vision in which the sacred Reiki symbols were revealed to him- giving form and language to an energy that had always existed but had never before been formally mapped. His work laid the foundation for the Reiki tradition practiced and shared around the world today.

FAQs

What is animal Reiki?

Animal Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy practice that supports relaxation, balance, and overall well-being. During a session, Reiki energy is offered in a calm and unhurried way allowing each animal to receive the experience on their own terms.

Animals are naturally sensitive and intuitive, and many respond to Reiki by becoming deeply relaxed, peaceful, or more settled. Every animal is different, however, and there is no single "right" way for an animal to respond.

How is animal Reiki different from Reiki for humans?

The energy itself is the same, but the approach is often different. Animals tend to respond best when they are given freedom and choice throughout the entire experience.

Animal Reiki is never about forcing an animal to remain still or placing hands on them when they do not want contact. The animal is always free to move, change position, come closer, or walk away.

Can Reiki ever harm my animal?

No. Reiki is an energy with its own inherent wisdom, moving where it is needed without having to be directed or controlled. The practitioner does not decide where the energy should go or what it should do. Reiki follows its own intelligence and is received according to the needs of the animal.

Does my animal need to be physically present?

No. Reiki does not always require physical touch. While some animals enjoy close contact, others may prefer Reiki from a distance.

What is distant animal Reiki And how can it work if we are not in the same place?

Distant animal Reiki is a way of offering Reiki energy without the practitioner and recipient being physically together. Within Reiki practice, energy is understood as something that is not limited by time and space in the same way that our bodies are.

One way to imagine this is to picture a pebble dropped into still water. The pebble touches one small point, but the ripples move outward through the entire body of water. In a similar way, we are all understood to exist within a larger interconnected field of energy. During a distant Reiki session, focused intention creates a connection through that field, allowing Reiki to be offered to an animal wherever they may be.

You do not need to fully understand the mechanics of it for your animal to receive the session. The animal can remain at home in a familiar, comfortable environment while I quietly focus on them and offer Reiki from a distance.

Reiki practitioners and animal guardians report meaningful experiences with both distant and in person sessions. Some animals may actually be especially well suited to distant Reiki because there is no unfamiliar person entering their space and no disruption to their normal environment. Every animal and every experience is individual, so I do not promise a particular result. My role is to offer the Reiki while the animal receives the experience in the way that is right for them.

Does my animal have to stay still during a distant session?

No. Your animal does not need to sit still, lie down, or behave in any particular way. They are free to sleep, eat, walk around, play, or move to another room. The session does not depend on the animal remaining in one place. The experience should always be pressure free.

Can I be with my animal during a distant session?

Absolutely! You may simply go about your normal routine, or you may choose to sit quietly nearby and observe. A familiar person's presence can also be comforting for some animals.

What information do you need for a distant session?

Before the session, I will typically ask for:

  • Your name and contact information

  • Your animal's name

  • A recent photograph of your animal

  • A brief description of why you are seeking Reiki

  • Any relevant information you feel would help me better understand your animal

What kinds of animals can receive Reiki?

Reiki can be offered to animals of all species and ages.

Because distant Reiki does not require travel, handling, or physical contact, it can be especially helpful for animals who are fearful, reactive, fragile, difficult to transport, or simply happiest in their own environment.

What kinds of situations can animal Reiki help with?

Animal Reiki may provide gentle support for animals experiencing:

  • Stress, anxiety, or fearfulness

  • Changes in the home or environment

  • Grief or loss of a companion

  • Trauma or a history of abuse or neglect

  • Behavioral or emotional challenges

  • Recovery periods following illness, injury, or surgery

  • Chronic or age-related challenges

  • Major life transitions

  • Hospice or end-of-life care

  • General relaxation and overall well-being

Reiki is a complimentary practice and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or replace veterinary care.
